WE WERE KINGS

A new play by Daniel Cameron | Directed by Jordan Blackwood | Edinburgh Fringe 2014
NSDF Edinburgh Award Shortlisted

About

‘We Were Kings. Sitting on top of the world. And now we’re sitting here, twiddling our thumbs, wondering where the hell our crowns went.’

A coming of age play about three twenty something friends reunited.

Max, Rosie and Jack reunite in a pub one evening to recount their younger years and look to the unknown of their respective futures. Recent events are brought to the surface, facing unspoken territory head-on and placing tension on their friendship.

Concept

I approached We Were Kings in a very collaborative manner, initially devising to inform Daniel’s writing and explore character. I was keen to develop a strong physical language alongside the text - finding a convention where flashbacks remained physically in a slowed-down world within the pub and were vocally displaced to the past event.

James Melling's sound design was a crucial element to this production, a naturalistic pub playlist constant in the background and abstracted sound feeding the distorted atmosphere of flashbacks

★★★★★ ...beautiful and perfectly stylised physical theatre combined with sharp, touching writing makes for an incredibly moving show.
— ThreeWeeks
★★★★ ...well-paced and crisply directed by Jordan Blackwood, integrating physical aspects of the performance effectively both in scene changes and within episodes.
